Charles F. sent us the first four photos on this page. The photo above is looking north on Main Street. Above the top of the telegraph pole in the center of the picture, you can see the dome of the old pre-tornado courthouse. From the relative position of everything, it would appear that the building nearest the telegraph pole is in the present location of U.S. Bank.
This photo of Main Street was taken in 1959
If this photo actually is Vine Street in 1876, it is perhaps the oldest photo we have in our collection. The Begley Blacksmith Shop is in the present location of Hays' Music. The pre-tornado courthouse is visible at the top fo the picture. The sidewalk running up the right side of the photo appears to be made of wooden planks.
The photo above shows a view of the Wright Hotel (later the Ducker Hotel and Dunn Hotel) with a passing circus parade. The Wright family appears prominently in Poplar Bluff history. At the corner of Main and Poplar was the old W.D.B.A. Store, owned by Wright, Dalton, Bell, and Anchor. At 401 S. 4th Street was the Wright and Young Tavern.
The punk rockers at the left are actually the Rhodes Family from Poplar Bluff. These country music singers appeared frequently at the Grand Ole Opry, and had their own TV show on Channel 12 in the 1960's. Theirs was a Branson-style mix of country music and comedy. Speck, Slim, and Dusty are the brothers. According to my cousin, Mona, the the name of the girl in the photo is Bea Hitt. She currently lives in Arkansas, and visits Poplar Bluff from time to time. She sometimes sings at the Twin Towers and at Fisherman's Net near Wappapello. Thanks to Marjorie C. for the old photo!
Bluff City Motors was on the east side of town, at the corner of Peach Street and East Pine. This photo, courtesy of Charles F., is from 1949.
The Clown on the left is Cecil (C.J.) Woods who lived in the 1600 block of Thomas Street in south Poplar Bluff. He was a clown and slack-rope walker in the 1930's and 1940's. He would often set up the rope in his yard, and practice walking the it there. He and his wife Mary performed at county fairs and circuses all over the United States. Later in his life, he continued to work the county fair circuit. C.J.'s nephew, Lee H., sent us this photo. Lee worked for his uncle C.J. at the Stoddard County Fair, running the ring-toss booth a couple of times during the 1950's.
This is Stovall's Department Store on Main Street. Judging by the cars, this photo is probably from the 1940's. This building later became Roth's Store, and is a Dollar General Store today. Thanks to Charles F. for the pic!
